If you’re booked in (or thinking about booking) semi-permanent eyebrow make-up, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement and nerves – and that’s completely normal. One of the most important steps in achieving beautiful, long-lasting results actually happens before your appointment: proper pre-care.
I always say that great brows don’t start in the treatment chair – they start in the days and weeks leading up to your appointment. This guide will talk you through exactly how to prepare, why each step matters, and what could happen if pre-care isn’t followed.
Why pre-care matters so much
Your skin plays a huge role in how pigment is implanted, retained, and healed. Following the correct pre-care advice helps to:
Improve pigment retention
Reduce sensitivity and bleeding
Support smoother healing
Achieve more even, longer-lasting results
Skipping pre-care doesn’t just affect the day of your appointment – it can impact your final results and may even mean I’m unable to proceed with treatment.
What to avoid before your eyebrow appointment
No aspirin or ibuprofen 24 hours before
These thin the blood, which can cause excessive bleeding during treatment. Too much bleeding pushes pigment out of the skin, leading to poor retention.
No alcohol 24 hours before
Alcohol increases sensitivity and bleeding, making the treatment more uncomfortable and affecting how well the pigment settles.
No caffeine at least 3 hours before
Caffeine can make you more sensitive and twitchy during treatment, which isn’t ideal when we’re working on precise brow work.
Don’t tint, wax, or tweeze your brows for 7 days before
I need to see your natural brow shape and hair growth so I can design the best possible shape for your face. Fresh tinting or waxing can also irritate the skin.
No sunbeds, tanning, or sunburn for 7 days before
Tanned or sunburnt skin is compromised skin. Pigment won’t heal properly in damaged skin, and treatment may need to be postponed for safety reasons.
Avoid retinol, AHA’s, and chemical peels for 3–4 weeks before
These products thin and sensitise the skin, making it unsuitable for PMU. If you’re unsure whether something you use contains active ingredients, please ask before your appointment.
No laser treatments, Botox, fillers, or chemical peels in the brow area 3–4 weeks before and after
These treatments affect skin structure and healing and can interfere with pigment retention.
No skin conditions in the eyebrow area
Broken skin, infections, eczema, psoriasis, or active irritation in the brow area may mean treatment cannot go ahead. Your safety always comes first.
What happens if pre-care isn’t followed?
I’ll always be honest with you. If your skin isn’t suitable on the day, I may need to reschedule your appointment. This isn’t to be awkward – it’s to protect your skin and ensure you get the best possible outcome.
Good pre-care = better brows, smoother healing, and results you’ll love.
A gentle reminder about healing and touch-ups
Semi-permanent brows are a process, not a one-off treatment. Your brows will go through several healing stages and will soften and fade before your touch-up appointment. This is completely normal and part of achieving balanced, natural-looking results.
Final thoughts
I want you to feel confident, informed, and excited about your appointment – never unsure or overwhelmed. If you’re ever unclear about pre-care, products you’re using, or whether something applies to you, please just ask. I’d much rather answer a question than risk compromising your results.
